Hey Sam et al,

So, [regarding] the Briarwood [megachurch] wanting a police force: what do they gain from it that they can’t gain from just employing off-duty cops?

Access to civil asset forfeiture.

Alabama has the worst Civil forfeiture laws in the country, the police department that seizes the money or property keeps 100 percent of the seized proceeds in Alabama. There also is no requirement that state and local law enforcement agencies account for the forfeitures and show how the money is spent.

Police have a bar so low to justify seizing property that there might as well be one and the onus is then on the owner to prove their innocence.
