Regression to the mean is the theory behind the ‘smart people come from stupid people’ idea. It’s also why very intelligent people can have slacker/less impressive off spring.
Regression to the mean makes sense, but to use it as a sole reason would mean that other variables are accounted for, which I don’t think they are.
