Kosher Tidepod Touchdown

Becky, Meredith, and Josh eat kosher gushers snacks in place of kosher laundry pods while exploring why laundry detergent even has kosher certification to begin with. They also balk at a Texas lawmaker’s attempt to make women “more responsible” about sex by outlawing abortion and an Iowa lawmaker’s attempt to create state standards for high school bible classes. Also: what kind of auto insurance does Jesus need?

  • Texas lawmaker thinks it’s too easy to get an abortion, wants to abolish it. This is how easy it is:
    • 6 months after HB 2’s passage in 2013, abortion facilities decrease by almost 1/2, with remaining facilities concentrated in large urban center (meaning many women have to travel hundreds of miles to receive care)
    • Prior to receiving an abortion a woman must undergo state-directed counseling to discourage abortion, a mandatory ultrasound where provider must show image and describe the fetus, and a 24 wait after initial visit.
    • Private insurance policies cover abortion only in cases of life endangerment, unless you purchase additional coverage.
    • Health plans offered under the Affordable Care Act exchanges can only cover abortion if the woman’s life is endangeredl
    • Medication abortion cannot use telemedicine.
    • The parent of a minor must consent and be notified before an abortion is provided.
    • No public funding except for life endangerment, rape or incest.
    • No abortion after 20 weeks unless danger to woman’s life, or lethal fetal anomaly.
